I went to my figure drawing class this week. Gwenda is our model and she is a very beautiful full figure model. The only thing she is wearing is a silk Chinese wrap. I love the pose! I don't know if I am going to use color. I want to but right now I am hesitate with watercolors and I don't want to lug my oils. So, I have to think about using color. Here is last month model.

The Sketchbook Project

Talk about waiting till the last minute to sign up for something. I joined the sketchbook project. My theme.. In Ten Minutes". I am hoping to create some loose sketches and then add splashes of color. This is a quick drawing that took more than ten minutes.

I took a walk today. It's a nice crisp Autumn day. While walking the dog, I took my camera around the neighborhood. I just love the shadows during this time of year.

Road Trip to Chicago

On the way to Chicago, we stayed in Cleveland for the day. We went to the Cleveland Zoo. It was amazing. It felt like you were walking through a botanical garden and the rainforest section was amazing. This is Willie, a 32 year old male elephant who lost his tusk.

I visited Chicago this past week and found the city so fascinating. This was the first time and what an architectural delight. The buildings were so interesting with it's unique structures. Need Some Guidance

I started another painting for the Earth Stories series. This is on the second recycled blinds. I switched to acrylic paints and I am loving the colors. I haven't worked in acrylic paints in over 10 years. So I am in the process of stocking up on the acrylic paints

I have been reading the book, " How to Make Your Colors Shine" by Jeanne Bobie. It's mostly for watercolorists but I was looking for a black that wasn't dull. In her chapter Dark Glows, she had a great mixture for black and I had to try it on this current painting. This painting is a stretch. I am using new materials. (Things found in the garbage). I found 2 wooden blinds in the garbage and have recycled them into four supports for my environmental series.

What a tough day of drawing! This Saturday, we had two models..one female and one male. I did several quick sketches.Then I attempted to draw on black paper. Nothing and I mean nothing was working. The one thing that worked was the first drawing,... a gesture drawing.

I pulled out the anatomy book and started learning how to draw the basic skull.

Thank you everyone, who posted encouraging words. They helped me! Even though the difficult times are continuing ..art journaling is helping me through it the most..These times make you reflect on your own life...where you are ....where your going and coming to the reality that you don't have all the time in the world...like you thought when you were 20...But the good news is... it make you re-energized.

The time is ! Go for what you.want! This year I have made a commitment to be more proactive with my art. I started with a new project called Earth Stories...more on that later. But here I am almost finished with this painting,. I still need to finished the face. But it does represents my state of mind.

Life has been really busy lately. Both my friend and father-in-law have been in CCU. My dad has been there fro 7 weeks and now we are taking it day by day....looking for any positive signs and seeking hope. My friend thankful is getting better day by day. It's a slow process for her. There has been no time for art or posting..which I miss as it help me clear my head. I see I have new friends and am happy that you are following my blog. I will be visiting your blogs soon. I attended a conference and I left my sketchbook at home. Not to be deterred on my lunch-break, I found some notebook paper, walked to the local park in New York City, and found this statue. It was the best lunch-break in a long time and it was to nice of a day on Saturday to waste time eating.

Over the Memorial Day weekend I went to Long Beach, a place I once called home. I love to take photographs and pulled up one of my favorites photographs that I took while I lived there.
I have been working on smaller sketches and practicing my watercolor techniques...nothing to cheer about...but I am eager to improve and continue to learn.. so I am in that awkward stage of struggling to get where I want to be with watercolors. This weekend I am taking a break from watercolors and returning to oils so that I can create some new works that I have been thinking about and researching. Hopefully I will be posting them soon.

I haven't started any new projects this week. So, I decided to complete some old painting, hoping to make them stronger. This is one of the paintings that I revisit. I like this version better. Tomorrow it is going to be 84 degrees and I am heading to the beach. I need a little inspiration from nature's oceans and since I am taking my watercolors see what emerges.

Well, the warm weather has arrived and spring recess is over! Tomorrow will be 85 degrees. Oh well! I think the nice weather is coming this weekend. This is great because I have my first Meetup group in Central Park. We are going to the Botanical Garden to sketch in watercolors.

I was able to spent more time in the studio. I was able to complete some paintings and continued to work on others. Here is one I completed.

Finding some Joy

I decided to turn this watercolor sketch from a photo into an oil painting. So, I am painting it on Masonite board. I love the feel of the paint moving across the Masonite board, the creaminess it can produce and how the board holds the oils.The brushstrokes it can create. I am almost finished and am excited about the painting it. It's nice to change material every now and then. I was getting a little tired of working on canvas. So, working with Masonite board is a nice change and inspirational. Now, I have to finish all the work I started on canvas so I can concentrate on my newer works.

This is really an old painting that I re-worked recently. It started as a simple drawing of a tree that had a lot of character. The limbs twisted and moved in all kinds of ways.I loved it and still love this tree to this day. I think this spring. I'll revisit it.

Well, who can believe it is already 10 years into the millennium. Every year I set these great goals. What I want to accomplish health, career, financial etc. Somewhere around June or July, I remember I need to do a better job at keeping these goals. This year it different. Today, I am keeping it simple. Instead of a setting goals, every day I am going to ask myself "What have I done for my art today?"

The Artists Objective Website offers a weekly discussion around this topic. It has keep me more focus on creating, marketing and networking my artwork. Reading other artist's process on the business side of art, encourages to take these steps. So my New Year's resolution is to focus on What I have done for my art on a daily basis.

Today, I joined a meetup, called The Central Park Sketching and Art Meetup Group. I am looking forward to doing something new this year.

I am trying some new lettering techniques from an online class.. Also, I'm attempting some new watercolor techniques that I have read in a step by step book. However, I am still having trouble building up darks through washes. They are coming out with water stain marks and it's not quite the effect I am looking for in the dark area.

Fall Leaves

Recently, I haven't been painting and posting. I have been busy with life. So, I have been taking 20 minutes walks around the neighborhood. What a rejuvenation! This years, the colors of the leaves, in New York, seem richer and more vibrant. I especially love the yellows and the browns this year. I have been blown away! So, I've been collecting leaves, starting with one leaf that catches my eye and the rest just seem to complement it. These are the ones I collected today on my walk.

Well, it's finished. I had so much fun with this tree I started a painting. It's funny the painting has a totally different vibe to it. I been taking care of some art business for the past two weeks and haven't had time to focus on creating. But, I was able to go back this weekend. Today, I decided to experiment with pen, Chinese ink, and watercolors. Here's my first attempt.

I found this unusual tree in Astoria Park. It grows almost sideways. It has a huge gapping whole that extends from the base to the middle of its trunk. The whole is so deep it almost reaches to the other side. The branches twist and turn as they grow upward. This tree is quite the sight. As unusual as it is....its uniqueness makes it so beautiful that I had to go for it!

A Break From Reality

Ganesha: Take 2 (Work in Progress)

Well, here's another Ganesha painting. I used the same colors as I did with the Blue Ganesha, only with more green. I went back to using some of my favorite colors, phthalo green. phthalo blue and cadmium yellow. I haven't worked in this color combination in a long time. Boy, it felt good! I'm working out the lighting and values in order to create more drama and have been thinking about adding a psychedelic background. But, I may do that for the next Ganesha painting.

After a long rest from this painting, I went back to paint the blue Ganesha. I been experimenting with color, technique and value. After working on several landscape paintings, I have been incorporating what I learned into this painting. Just working in blue has taught me lot, which in turn, I hope to incorporate in my landscapes. This was just a practice and was done on canvas board. I am going to add a few more details. Then call it quits so that I can do a new Ganesha on a hardboard.

A quick sketch with minimal computer enhancement. I needed to correct the areas of white. This Adobe style house is located in Bellerose, N.Y. I love it! When the sun sets low in the sky, this house has wonderful shadows. Next time, I'll wait for the sun to set.

EDM Challenge 219 "Windows"

I have been sketching to get out of my dry spell.This was an Everyday Matter challenge, an online artist group I joined. I love one of their challenges, windows and am thinking about doing a watercolor series. One of the artist on this website had a lovely pencil drawing with a wash done over it. Love it! She has spurred me on to try some drawings with a wash.

I started the Challenge for Virtual Gallery, "Oh so Blue". So I decided to do a Blue Ganesha. This is the second day of work on him. I know I have a long ways to go. I need to deepen the color and strengthen the drawing piece. Prima Gallery has many talented artist and I love their work. You should see the example of next months challenge. WoW!!!

Right now the Blue Ganesha is not up to par and the deadline is Feb 28. See what I can get done tomorrow.

He is finished. This was a fun painting to paint. I think I really step outside of myself and experimented with composition and technique. This process of putting down big bold colors in 10 minutes was fun. I'm a slow painter so this was a break from habit. I have two others in the same process. One has potential and the other....well just lets say... no matter how many times I come back to it ....it's not going to happen! I color corrected Ganesha's photograph, straighten some lines, but I decided not to add texture. For now, it is time to put it away, where I can not see it for a while. This way I'll come back with a fresh perspective, to see if it's truly finished.

Melissa, who I know on the artist's objective.com website (great website for artist. It's full of great advice from Melissa and other artists. She is the one who suggested I add detail to Ganesha's face. That was the push I needed to get out of my artist block. It was like a door opened and I instantly knew what the painting needed.
This Hindu God, who removes obstacles, is commonly prayed to before new adventures. How perfect to that I'm painting him as I start this journey. It feels great to step away from the still life paintings and start painting from the imagination. It's refreshing! It's inspiring! He is still a work in progress but I feel it is almost complete.

I went into Dreams East and I found this statue, sitting on the shelf. I had just started a new adventure.... designing my website and getting an art consultant. I had made a promise that this year would be the year to live my life's dream to the fullest....or at least take steps in that direction.
So I was looking for statues to paint and Dream East, being one of my favorite places to visit. I found myself being draw to a statue behind the cashier's shelf, Ganesha. Not fully understanding the belief behind Ganesha, but knowing I wanted to paint him. I purchase it and here he is......a work in progress.

Painting offers me that journey, a chance to depart from the real world and let my imagination run free. To me, it feels like mediation in motion. It asks me to suspend judgment, encourages me to see what emerges, to listen to my gut instincts, and to find beauty in everyday moments. In these moments I am truly grateful and do not feel a sense of lack. Painting is my joy!
